    At New Market on Saturday, Westminster's boys and girls each took third at the Lancer Invitational at Kemptown Park. Rob Kelvey led the boys with a seventh-place finish, while Allison Eaton's 18th-place finish paced the girls.

    Liberty's Jim Ridder took eighth while Francis Scott Key's Arthur Leathers ran 10th. Liberty's Liz Pickett finished 12th in the girls race.

    Liberty's boys cross country team took the top three spots and the girls team placed five in the top 11 as the Lions cruised in a quad-meet Wednesday at Winfield.

    The Liberty boys totaled 20 points as Jim Ridder won the race in 17 minutes, 33 seconds. Andrew Cross took second (17:48) and Pat Dougherty was third (17:54).

    North Carroll took second with 48 points, followed by South Carroll (78) and Walkersville (90).

    On the girls' side, Liz Pickett took second (21:03), Caitlin Riebau was fourth (21:58) and Laura Ball sixth (23:30) as Liberty collected 31 points to North Carroll's 47. NC's Katie Hursey won the girls race in 19:36. South Carroll scored 49 points and Walkersville had 105.

    At Eldersburg, Westminster's Allison Eaton took first place with a time of 21:08 at Westminster topped Liberty 19-42. Ally Thompson finished third (22:08), Lindsay Southworth placed fourth (22:09) and Carly Gavigan took fifth (22:27) and Katie Price finished sixth (22:37) for the Owls.

    At Westminster, the Panthers took seven of the top 10 spots and beat the Falcons 22-38. Nick Zgorski won in 18 minutes, 28 seconds, followed by WM's Herb Wilson is 18:39.

    North Carroll's Katie Hursey cruised to a dual-meet win, but the Falcons placed six runners in the top 10 and won 24-33. Hursey finished in 20:19, but Kristen O'Brien (21:37) and Katie Griffin (22:09) came in 2-3 to lead WM. Roxanne Fleischer took fifth for the hosts.

    At Westminster, the host Falcons took third and fourth individually, but the Knights had too much depth. WM's Herb Wilson was third in 19:09 while Dan Adamczyk was fourth in 19:31.

    The visiting Knights took five of the top six spots. Kristen O'Brien paced the Falcons by finishing fifth in 24:22. Katie Griffin was next for WM, seventh in 24:28.

    Rob Kelvey took first to pace the Owls to a team win at the South Carroll Invitational.

    North Carroll's Katie Hursey earned a 29-second victory, but Westminster prevailed with some fine pack running, led by Allison Eaton, who finished sixth.

    Owls sweep Mountain Run

    At Walkersville, Westminster's Rob Kelvey set a new course record at the Mountain Run at Walkersville as the Owls rolled to the boys team victory.

    In the girls race, North Carroll's Katie Hursey set a course record to win the girls race, but Westminster finished first as a team.

    The Westminster boys finished with 46 points and the girls finished with 56.

    Liberty's boys cross country team placed four runners in the top 20 and successfully defended its small division title at Saturday's Bull Run Invitational at Hereford High.

    The Lions totaled 79 points behind Jim Ridder's fifth place finish (17 minutes, 57 seconds). Pat Dougherty (ninth), Rush Lester (17th) and Andrew Cross (19th) helped Liberty win its second Bull Run crown in as many years.

    Francis Scott Key took fourth with 144 points as Arthur Leathers took sixth (18:21) and Jared Welsh ran 10th (18:37).

    Winters Mill took sixth with 210 points as Herb Wilson finished 31st; South Carroll was ninth (296) behind C.J. Naper's 11th-place finish. Century was 11th in the team standings as Colin Haser ran 15th.

    North Carroll's boys ran 11th in the medium division race, led by Nick Zgorski's 33rd place. Westminster was third in the elite division as Rob Kelvey placed 10th (17:34) and Brendan Dulaney was 17th.

    On the girls' side, Katie Hursey ran third (20:49) in the medium division race and led North Carroll (186 points) to a seventh-place finish.

    Winters Mill finished second (93 points) in the small division thanks to Kristen O'Brien (11th) and Katie Griffin (12th). Liberty took fifth 156 points as Liz Pickett finished ninth. Century was seventh (Carly Reed, 17th), South Carroll took eighth (Lindsay Warfield, seventh), and Francis Scott Key finished 17th (Mairin Leahy, 38th).

    Westminster ran ninth in the elite division and Allison Eaton led the Owls in 27th place.

    Hursey crossed the finish line in a time of 19 minutes, 15 seconds and topped 205 other runners in the field. Her performance helped NC finish 17th out of 27 teams.

    "We were just waiting for how she did in her first meet," said Panthers boys coach Andrew Keech. "Before you knew it, she was in the lead pack. Coming to the finish she just had a real nice kick and won by one second. It's a good way for her to start her cross country career."

    Kara Windsor ran 84th (22:25) and Molly Donovan was 108th (23:01).

    The NC boys finished 20th out of 38 teams, led by Robert Pagels' 65th-place finish (18:04). Tim Young was 80th (18:15) and Nick Zgorski was 84th (18:19).

    At Emmitsburg, the Westminster boys took third place at the Peter Geraghty Invitational. Rob Kelvey ran second in 16:36 to power the Owls.

    Brendan Dulaney (17:07) was 15th, Jacob Sisler took 31st (17:35) and Josh Vana was 32nd (17:37).

    "It's looking like a really nice pack," said Owls coach David Cox. "Definitely a big change over last year."

    The Owls girls took ninth out of 20 teams as Allison Eaton ran 32nd (21:25). Ally Thompson (51st, 21:51), Carly Gavigan (52nd, 21:53), Caitlyn Pyle (54th, 21:54) and Katie Price (56th, 21:56) rounded out their top five.

    At Keyser, W.Va., the Lions' Liz Pickett finished fourth (20:23) and Caitlin Riebau took eighth (20:35) while Kristen O'Brien was third (20:20) and Katie Griffin 11th (20:44) for the Falcons in a close race. Liberty and WM went 2-3 in the 14-team event.

    On the boys' side, the Lions placed sixth out of 18 teams as Jim Ridder ran 15th (16:59) and Pat Dougerty was 19th (17:10). Winters Mill was 13th behind Herb Wilson's 41st place (17:41). Dan Adamczyk was 49th (18:00).

    Liberty sweeps meet

    At Libertytown Park, the Lions girls started their season strong by winning a quad-meet over Thomas Johnson, Linganore and Frederick.

    Despite missing two of their top five runners, the Lions topped Thomas Johnson 34-59 behind Liz Pickett's third place (21:20). Kelly Davis took fourth, Lisa Robbins was sixth and Samantha Black ninth.

    On the boys' side, Liberty (28) dominated a tri-meet over Linganore (51) and TJ (58) with seven runners in the top 11. Jim Ridder led the way with a second-place finish in 17:15. Pat Dougherty finished in fifth, Eric Liberatore in sixth, Rush Lester in seventh, Mike Meadows in eighth, Nick Hruch in ninth and Andrew Cross finished in 11th.

  • Urbana - Winters Mill Dual Meet 9/6/05

    At Ijamsville, the Hawks girls outran the Falcons 24-31 despite WM's Kristen O'Brien winning in 21 minutes, 35 seconds. Urbana's Katie Nordyke finished second in 21:44. Roxanne Fleischer finished fifth, Katie Griffin seventh, Cristina Ferrara eighth and Jen Jupitz 10th. Urbana's boys also won, taking the first five spots. Herb Wilson led WM by placing sixth (19:29).
